How the unpaid toll text scam works

Real toll agencies bill the vehicle's registered owner and don't collect this way by surprise text. The link leads to a fake page built to steal your credit card and driver's license details.

Red flags to watch for

• A text about a small “unpaid toll” with a pay-now link
• Urgency — pay today to avoid a late fee
• A web address that isn't the real toll agency's site
• It arrives even if you don't use that toll road

“E-ZPass: you have an unpaid toll of $6.99. Pay now to avoid a $50 late fee: ez-pass-pay.info”

What to do

1. Don't tap the link — delete the message.
2. If you're unsure, go to your toll agency's official website directly.
3. The FBI and FTC have both warned these toll texts are scams.
4. Report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
